KYOTO — July 2, 2002 — Sophia Cradle Incorporated (Headquarter: Kyoto; CEO: Kazunori Sugiyama), an innovative developer of mobile phone software, today announced to release a compression tool for mobile Java applications. The tool compresses an application by 10-15% and supports multi-language mobile phone Java versions.

Mobile Java [*1] phone users with NTT DoCoMo's "i-appli" [*2] function (the 503i series) now amounts to more than ten million users. Moreover, users of Java-enabled handsets for other Japanese carriers "au" and J-phone have also been increasing significantly.
However, the problem is that the application size for mobile phones is limited. When the size of the application gets too big for the memory capacity, the developer needs to try hard to make it smaller by hand.
As a solution, Sophia Cradle developed SophiaCompress, a sophisticated compression tool that compresses a mobile Java application automatically while supporting multi-language Java versions.
Sophia Cradle achieved the highest compression rate in the world, 10-15%, by enabling sharing and shortening variable names in a program and deleting unused variables and logic of the program.
Pricing and Availability
The price of SophiaCompress is 1,000,000 JPY per ten licenses and Sophia Cradle expects to sell fifty licenses in a year.
