Sophia Cradle Updates Mobile Java Compression Tool To Support 7-Zip

Compression rate raised up to 30% by 7-Zip support

Abstract

KYOTO — March 14, 2003 — Sophia Cradle Incorporated (Headquarter: Kyoto; CEO: Kazunori Sugiyama), an innovative developer of mobile phone software, today announced the release of its updated compression tool for mobile Java applications SophiaCompress V2.2. The main feature of the upgrade is support for 7-Zip [*1], which raises the compression rate up to 30%.

Full Story

Today, more than 25 million mobile phone handsets in Japan are equipped with Java applications including i-Appli services. Taking overseas markets into account, mobile Java applications will spread more rapidly especially when better content services are introduced to the market.

On the other hand, application developers face size constraints of mobile phones. Some models only have 10 or 30 kilobyte memory for an application, this is a huge barrier to the development of rich-featured and value-added applications.

SophiaCompress is the solution to such a problem. Interest concerning Sophia Cradle's original compression technology, has led to many leading content providers and major game makers swiftly adopting SophiaCompress.

The latest version 2.2 enables SophiaCompress to easily call 7-Zip, a popular compression tool and GNU LGPL software, from its graphical user interface. As a result, time-to-market and maintainability of mobile Java applications are improved dramatically by compressing them even smaller than before.

Sophia Cradle plans to make SophiaCompress support NTT DoCoMo's 505i series and other mobile Java handsets overseas. Moreover, a class integration function will be equipped soon to provide higher compression rates.
